Why are some kittens advertised for S$1,200–S$2,600?

Online British Shorthair listings include a two-month-old female advertised at S$1,200 and a golden colourpoint kitten at S$2,400, with other listings around S$2,600. These are asking prices. An online listing alone does not establish whether the seller is licensed.

If you come across someone selling a litter from their own pet without the relevant licence, the kittens may have been raised outside the standards applied to licensed businesses. NParks explains that animals from unlicensed sources have an unknown health status and may not have been bred according to the health and care standards required of licensed breeders and pet shops.

Missing records leave practical gaps. Without pedigree papers, there is no registered family history supporting a claim such as “pedigree British Shorthair” or “champion bloodline”. Without vaccination and veterinary records, the dates, treatments and examination results are unconfirmed. A photograph also tells you nothing about the parents' genetic test results.

What goes into buying through a licensed seller?

In Singapore, pet-shop premises must pass an AVS inspection before a licence is issued. Cats sold by pet shops must come from approved sources or enter Singapore under the applicable import requirements. Shops retain proof of origin and records of animals entering and leaving their premises.

Vaccination cards carry specific details: the cat's microchip number, breed, sex, age and colour, the vaccine given, and the administering veterinarian's name and signature. The card accompanies the cat when it is sold or transferred. These AVS record requirements connect the kitten's identity with its recorded care.

Importing a kitten adds veterinary paperwork, a travel crate, air transport and arrival arrangements. One Australian breeder publishes an estimated shipping charge to Singapore of A$2,800 for one kitten, or A$3,200 for two travelling in the same crate, separate from the kittens' purchase prices. That estimate applies to its own transport arrangement; other routes and providers have different charges.

Veterinary care, vaccinations, transport and documentation are real expenses within the selling price. The price also supports daily care, premises, staff and the business's margin. This helps explain why buying through an established channel involves more than paying for the kitten's appearance or breed name.

Choosing your first British Shorthair

A round face is easy to notice in a photo. Chest width, body proportions and the way the ears fit the head are less obvious, especially while a kitten is still growing. British Shorthairs generally take three to five years to reach full maturity.

Do older kittens cost less?

Some breeders reduce the price of kittens that are still waiting for a home. One US breeder gives a clear example: blue, lilac and other classic-colour British Shorthairs are US$2,900 at three to four months, while colours such as cinnamon and chocolate are US$3,200. Kittens still available from five months receive a 10% reduction, bringing those prices to US$2,610 and US$2,880.

At an illustrative exchange rate of US$1 to S$1.28, that works out to approximately S$3,710 falling to S$3,340, or S$4,100 falling to S$3,690—a saving of about S$370–S$410. This is one US breeder's age-discount policy, before shipping or import costs. Singapore sellers set their own prices and discount policies.

What does a British Shorthair's appearance have to do with its price?

The British Shorthair's characteristic look combines a round head, full cheeks, a broad chest, sturdy legs and a compact body with a short, dense coat. The CFA breed standard assesses the head, body, coat and colour, so breeders evaluating appearance consider the whole cat.

The ears are medium-sized, broad at the base and rounded at the tips, set well apart within the rounded head. The desired effect is a balanced outline. Adult males generally develop more prominent cheeks than females, and a young kitten's face will continue to change as it grows. How much difference can coat colour make?

Golden shaded cats have a lighter golden undercoat with darker colour towards the hair tips, creating shading across the back and sides. The shade of the undercoat and the distribution of darker tipping produce different overall looks.

One Australian breeder lists neutered pet kittens at A$4,200–A$4,800 for blue or lilac, A$5,500–A$6,200 for black golden shaded NY11, and A$6,000–A$6,500 for the lighter-tipped black golden NY12. How much does a kitten from champion bloodlines cost?

In Singapore, there are ANCATS-registered British Shorthair kittens advertised at S$4,988, and kittens described as coming from UK champion bloodlines advertised from S$5,500, including multi-generation pedigree papers, microchipping and vaccinations. There is no standard surcharge for champion ancestry: the quote covers the individual kitten and the care and services provided with it.

What care and health records come with a kitten?

Genetic testing and a heart ultrasound provide different information; a parent's genetic test result is separate from any heart examination of the kitten.
