Ragdolls are large, gentle, deeply affectionate cats that bond closely with their people. A few breed traits are worth planning for.

Coat & Grooming

• Semi-long, silky coat with little undercoat — less mat-prone than most longhairs, but still brush 2–3 times a week (more during shedding), focusing on the ruff, armpits and hindquarters.

Body & Build

• One of the largest breeds and very slow to mature — they keep filling out until about 3–4 years of age. Feed for steady, healthy growth; there is no need to rush it.

Temperament & Living With Them

• Famously docile and trusting — they often go limp when held (the "ragdoll" trait) and follow you from room to room. Because they are so gentle and non-defensive, keep them strictly indoors.
• They form strong bonds and do best with company — avoid leaving them alone for very long stretches.

Health Watch-points

• Ragdolls have a breed-specific HCM gene with a DNA test available; responsible breeders test their lines. Keep an ideal weight and attend annual vet checks. Refer to the cattery handover and your vet for your kitten's records.
